Picking out a Devotional for Kids
Plus a giveaway of Sarah Young's Jesus Today: Devotions For Kids!
I had planned to actually write a post about this several months ago, but life got the best of me. Back in September I had decided that since it was a new school year that I wanted to start doing some family devotionals. At Michael's preschool he is getting chapel weekly where he learns about God and all the different stories in the Bible, but I wanted to start something at home for all of us to participate in.

While Michael was at school one day, I traveled to our local Family Christian Store actually looking for a Veggie Tales devotional. We love Veggie Tales and at one point they did have a family devotional, but the store was out of all of the current Veggie Tales devotionals. When I was shown where the devotionals were for kids, I was amazed at how many there were to choose from.
Last month, I got the opportunity to review Sarah Young's newest kids devotional Jesus Today: Devotions for Kids. Like the one recommended to me back in September, this has been adapted from her adult version Jesus Today.
One thing that I love about this devotional is that it is just numbered which is great if you're not actually starting on January 1st. Also great if you like to rotate through your devotions which I think we will do in a few years.
It's very easy to read, but I must admit that Michael (who is 4) is finding it hard to understand what I'm talking about. This book is recommended for ages 6 - 10. Don't get me wrong, when I talk to him a little more about what we read he is understanding it - just takes a little longer.
While I've been reading it to Michael, it feels more as if Jesus Himself is talking in the book. In other devotionals, they start out with the scripture and then explain what the scripture means in terms of something that the child might go through. This devotional is completely different and is always reminding you that no matter what, you should always come to Him for anything.
Many thanks to Propeller Consulting, LLC for providing this prize for the giveaway. Choice of winners and opinions are 100% my own and NOT influenced by monetary compensation. I did receive a sample of the product in exchange for this review and post.

I have been looking for something of this sort...at least if you cycle through them Michael can grow into them! :)
ReplyDeleteThat's what I'm thinking. She does have one that looks like is more for our little guys ages, Jesus Calling for Little Ones.
DeleteI've taught different age groups of Sunday school. This book would be excellent for an opening or closing devo - I love the cover too!
ReplyDeleteAwesome idea!
DeleteI look for something that is easily relatable to everyday life, but also opens my kids eyes to things they have not experienced. :)

ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
Jen, I actually was thinking about you and your family while I was writing this post up. It would be a great devotional for both boys as well as Mom and Dad!
DeleteI look for something that's really Biblically based - not just cutesy stories.
ReplyDeleteYes, I feel that is something very important to look for with any type of devotional.

ReplyDeleteIt really does help put things in a different light when your devotional deals with stuff you deal with daily.
DeleteI look for something that will keep their attention and they can relate too.
ReplyDeleteYes, that's what I was doing when I was at Family Christian. I actually sat down on the floor and looked through all the books to see if it was something my son would actually listen to and hopefully understand.
DeleteI look for something that is an easy read for my 9yr. old, and something she can relate to.
ReplyDeleteYes, making sure that your child will understand it is a big thing to look for. You don't want them to just read it and not absorb it.
