Salt Dough Handprint Santa Ornaments

a fun Christmas ornament to make with the kids for gifts, salt dough Christmas ornament,
I tried to do this last year as gifts from Michael, but we had such a hard time to just get two hand prints that we gave up.  Since I didn't have enough for everyone, I didn't even bother with painting the two that I had baked.

This year went a lot better with getting Michael to make eight hand prints in the salt dough.  Last year Jon, my husband, had cut out the two hands we were able to get which is the first picture to the left.  Since we were making eight of them, I chose not to cut each hand out and just cut a circle around each hand print.

Here's the recipe for the dough and baking:

2 cups of flour
1/2 cup of salt
1/2 cup of water

Mix until you get a doughy texture.  I did end up adding more flour and water so this is not exact.

Roll out the dough like you would making cookies.

Have your kids press their hands in the dough and then cut out with a knife.

Use a straw to make a hole to place yarn/string through to be able to hang on tree.  Place on a cookie sheet.  Bake at 200 degree F for 3 hours.

If you want to cut the hands out this is what the one we did last year looked like before baking.

After they're done baking take them off the cookie trays and let them cool.  I left them on over night and some of the thicker ones backs were a little soft.  Now the fun part of painting the hands to look like Santa.  I've also seen ones where they look like reindeer.  Maybe next year's gift from Michael?!?

These are all the items that I used.  You don't have to use the same colors, make it the way you want.

Americana True Red for Santa's hat
folk Art Wicker White for Santa's beard and part of his hat
Americana Butterscotch for the face
folk Art Medium Blue for the background if you don't cut the hand out
Americana Razzle Berry for Santa's rosy cheeks

You'll also need a black sharpie and some yarn or string to hang the ornament with.  Oh, and don't forget about paint brushes!

Don't forget to also write your child's name and year on the back!
