Spanish Rice
This is one of many meals that I loved when I was growing up. When I would come home from college, I would ask my mom to make this meal. Once I got married, I decided that I would try some of the meals that I loved growing up. This was actually one that Jon will eat. Tonight, Michael actually tried it and ate what we put on his plate. Here's how you make it.
1lb of hamburger meat
1 onion diced
1 green pepper diced
2 C white rice
1 18oz can tomato sauce
1 8oz can tomato sauce
Salt
Pepper
Oregano
Garlic Salt
I first started cooking the rice. I use Minute white rice because it's fast and simple to me, but I'm sure you could use regular white rice. Just follow the instructions for your rice.
I then brown my hamburger meat. Once it's cooked all the way, drain the grease. (My mom informed me that she would add the onions and green peppers into the hamburger after the grease has been drained. Cook for a few minutes to get the onions and green peppers to soften.)
If you're using the rice that I am, your rice should be done by now. Pour the rice into the dish with your browned meat.
Add your onion.
Add your green pepper. Here's a helpful tip on how to cut your green pepper.
Add the two cans of tomato sauce.
Add salt.
Add pepper.
Add oregano.
Add garlic salt. All to taste. I put a lot of oregano in it because we love oregano, but it's all up to you.
Stir everything together.
Cook on simmer for 20 minutes.
Jon thinks that food that is green will kill him, well not really, but he doesn't like green peppers so he picks them out.
He also adds hot sauce to it. He says it needs some flavor, but to be honest with you, there are plenty of flavor in there.
I hope you enjoy this meal as much as I do. It's not that hard to make. I've even made it for potlucks for work. I put it in my crock pot to keep it warm while at work. Try it out for yourself.
