Windy Corner Market and Restaurant
Review guidelines:
1 Fork = I would rather eat dog food.2 Forks = I would eat there if I was starving.
3 Forks = Not bad; someplace I would occasionally consider eating.
4 Forks = A good place to eat; I will put it into my rotation of places I dine frequently.
5 Forks = One of my all time favorites!
One caveat to note – I am allergic to fish and seafood, so if you are looking for those recommendations, you will have to consult someone else.
Because I have a daughter-in-law with Celiac and a really good friend who is Vegetarian, I will try to point out whether those options are present when I review a restaurant.
Saturday, March 9, 2013 - Lunch
Windy Corner Market and Restaurant
4595 Bryan Station Rd.Lexington, KY 40516
(859) 294-9338
The occasion was a leisurely afternoon drive following the Antique and Garden Show at the KY Horse Park. Windy Corner is one of three Central KY restaurants owned by locally renowned Chef Ouita Michel – the other two being Wallace Station on Old Frankfort Pike and Holly Hill Inn in Midway, KY. Windy Corner’s website promises “Windy Corner’s menu features Po-Boy sandwiches on locally made brioche, burgers, salads, seafood, breakfast, bakery goodies, soft serve ice cream and more.” There are also nightly dinner specials. This establishment uses mainly KY Proud products. My husband and I have dined there many times. Guests wait in line to order and the counter and then their food is brought to their table. At peak lunch times as well as Friday and Saturday night, the queue gets really long – so be advised of the wait times. There is a main dining room, an enclosed porch and patio dining. There is also an overflow parking lot across the street from the restaurant.
On this occasion, I ordered the Kentucky Combination Po-Boy – slightly modified. It comes with country ham, swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, and special sauce. I substituted Bourbon Barrel Beer Cheese for the special sauce. The sandwich came with thin cut fries. This is my favorite sandwich here. On this occasion, the sweet brioche sandwich roll was disappointingly stale; only one minor bump in all my visits to Windy Corner. My husband ordered the barbecue chicken plate which came with a skillet corn cake, pinto beans, and cole slaw. He substituted the chunky potato salad for the cole slaw. Not one to pass up excellent bakery goods and homemade desserts, I ordered the pistachio cake – one of my weaknesses. It was yummy, but large enough to take home in a box. Lunch for two was $26 including drinks and tip. There is also a kid’s menu offering 4-5 selections. Windy Corner is a very casual, family friendly place. Half the pleasure of the dining experience is the picturesque drive. They also offer live music on Friday nights from 6 pm to close. In addition to the restaurant, Windy Corner is also a market for locally made products which are displayed for sale in the main dining room. Selections include a variety of salsas, barbecue sauces, beer cheese, jams, jellies, pickles, and much more!
Gluten Free Options – none advertised.
Vegetarian Options – there are a couple of vegetarian options on the lunch menu such as a Tofu Burger and a Steamed Vegetable Basket.
