It had been many years since I had been to see a movie at the drive-in. I remember we would go every so often to see the new kid friendly movie that was showing first. My brother and I would then fall asleep during the more adult friendly second movie that my parents would watch.
Several months ago I found out through a post on a Facebook page I follow that there was a working drive-in theater outside of Winchester, VA which is not too far away (
Family Drive-In). I found
their Facebook page and began to follow. I knew we had to go and experience it as a family sometime, but was waiting for the perfect movie.
I couple weeks ago, we went to the Family Drive-In on the opening day of Disney's Planes Fire and Rescue because Michael absolutely loves Disney's Planes. The second movie was Transformers Age of Extinction of which Jon and I had not seen. We were hoping that Michael would fall asleep after Planes since the movie wasn't going to start until 9pm, but that did not happen.
Since he didn't get his nap that day, he ended up falling asleep on the ride over to the drive-in. We had gotten there early so we let him sleep, which was probably a bad idea since he didn't fall asleep after Planes.
They still use the old speakers and they worked perfectly.
They also had the option to listen through your car stereo which was pretty awesome. Except for the fact that my car beeps at you for using the car battery and not running the engine.
Not only was this Michael's first experience at a drive-in theater, it was Jon's first time as well. I wanted Jon and Michael to have the full drive-in experience so dinner was in the car from the concession stand! They hand you the menu when you pay for your tickets at the entrance. Oh and where can you see two movies for a little less than the price of one at a regular theater?!?
The concession stand. They also had someone outside grilling up the food.
I got their hotdog meal and Jon got their hamburger meal. I don't know if it was because I was extremely hungry or what, but the food was really delicious.
We got Michael the kids pizza meal. He got an awesome souvenir cup, a
slice of pizza, side order of fries, a fruit gummie snack, and a glow in
the dark bracelet.
Of course, we had to get some popcorn. Jon decided to spend the extra money to get this bucket so Michael could play with it afterwards. I know, we spoil our son.
We all loved the movie and are looking forward to it coming out on Blu-Ray to add to our collection. Jon thought that it was actually better than the first Planes movie.
So, after Planes was over there was an intermission of which Jon and Michael took a potty break and I just walked around. They played the old school clips between the movies. A lot of people actually left, but we stayed. It did start to rain, but not a down pour so we dealt with it. Jon and I liked the Transformers movie and we think Michael did as well. He did fall asleep as soon as the car started moving. We ended up getting home at around 2am!
We all had a great time there and we will definitely go again, but for a special occasion. Have you been to a drive-in theater? If so, what are some of your favorite memories? If you live near Winchester, VA and haven't checked out this drive-in, it's worth taking the whole family to go see a movie or two!
