This is my third year making boxes for Operation Christmas Child, but I have never done a box for a 10 - 14 year old boy.  I've read that this age group, the boys especially, is the group with the least boxes made.  I will admit, not ever being a teenage boy it was rather hard to figure out what to purchase and make sure it would fit the box.

Update - November 3, 2017

Starting this year, the following items should NOT be packed in the OCC boxes: Candy; toothpaste; used or damaged items; war-related items such as toy guns, knives, or military figures; chocolate or food; seeds; fruit rolls or other fruit snacks; drink mixes (powdered or liquid); liquids or lotions; medications or vitamins; breakable items such as snow globes or glass containers; aerosol cans.


Here's what I bought:

  • candy (I'll show below what all we're packing)
  • 2 yo-yos
  • tote bag
  • bag of marbles
  • jump rope
  • bouncy ball
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles tin can with a puzzle inside
  • notebook
  • Cars stickers
  • 2 glue sticks
  • crayons
  • markers
  • grab and go pack
  • harmonica
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles puzzle
  • slinky jr
  • solar powered calculator
  • silly puddy
  • Christmas cup
  • pencils
  • Nerf football
  • wash clothe
  • travel size tissue
  • travel size deodorant
  • 2 tooth brushes
  • brush and comb
  • stickers
  • coloring pages
  • Christmas ball and paddle
  • scissors


I took a good majority of the items out of the packaging to be able to fit all that I could in the box.  Here's one idea of how I saved some room and gave them something to hold some items in:

My mom had given me a whole bunch of her empty Crystal Light containers for Michael to put his crayons and markers in.  I had three unused containers and decided to use them for our boxes.  The whole box of crayons, 2 glue sticks, and I had bought some erasers and pencil grippers after some of these pictures were taken fit in this container.  My mom will be adding a pencil sharpener to the boxes for me.  I also used the cup to help hold items and get more in the box.

I also bought soap holders so that their soap could be stored after they opened them up.

Tooth brush protectors for all the tooth brushes.  I love the one that I use for my tooth brush.

Each box gets two caramel cover apple suckers because they are Michael's favorite suckers right now, three blow pops with bubble gum in the middle, a ring pop, some peppermint mints, spearmint mints, and dum-dums.

Don't forget to double bag all your candy.  Yep, these kids are going to probably be on a sugar high for a few days!

    just a warning you can't add anything with weapons...so TMNT is a no no, so are chapstick, deodorant and marbles. but the other things are great

      According to their website it says no war related toys. There's nothing on there about no chapstick or deodorant - their non-liquid. www.samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/what-goes-in-my-shoebox-suggestions/

    I just looked on their website and they specifically list deodorant and marbles as being ok. Chapstick is also ok as long as it is not a liquid. Hope this helps. https://www.samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/what-goes-in-my-shoebox-suggestions/
