Meats BBQ Market
Review guidelines:
1 Fork = I would rather eat dog food.2 Forks = I would eat there if I was starving.
3 Forks = Not bad; someplace I would occasionally consider eating.
4 Forks = A good place to eat; I will put it into my rotation of places I dine frequently.
5 Forks = One of my all time favorites!
One caveat to note – I am allergic to fish and seafood, so if you are looking for those recommendations, you will have to consult someone else.
Because I have a daughter-in-law with Celiac and a really good friend who is Vegetarian, I will try to point out whether those options are present when I review a restaurant.

Meats is part of the local BHG (Bluegrass Hospitality Group) which owns Malone’s, Sal’s, Harry’s and Drake’s. Meats is located in the former patio area of Sal’s. It has a small footprint with a large takeout area in the front and a line for dine in patrons. The occasion was a take-out meal for a Sunday family dinner. Since I have a BHG loyalty card, I was given a $25 gift card to spend at their newest restaurant concept. The coupon was good for three months and did not require a minimum purchase. It also covered everything on their menu. The day I was there, Meats was very crowded, both with carryout orders and dining room patrons.
As it was my first time there, I did not call in my order. Even with the crowd, I only waited about ten minutes for the food. Since we were going to be feeding three adults and three small children, I chose to order three dinner plates which each came with two sides and a corn muffin. One adult and one child require gluten free, so the breadth of GF items on the menu was helpful. Everything is packaged separately - the meat, sides and even the corn muffins, so there is no danger of cross contamination. The meats I selected were chopped pork, sliced brisket, and baby back ribs. For sides, I selected: mac & cheese, sweet potato casserole, green beans, baked beans, potato salad, and cucumber tomato salad. All except the mac & cheese were gluten free. The entire family sampled everything (except the mac & cheese). Everyone thought that all the selections were delicious! For sauces we chose: sweet BBQ, Carolina vinegar, and Bourbon BBQ. My only complaint was that they did not include enough sauce with the order and the sauce flavors seemed to be the only shortcoming with the entire meal! We ended up using some assorted BBQ sauce packets on hand from a previous meal at a local competitor.
Because I had the $25 gift card, the total check with tax was $8. So, we basically fed everyone for $5 apiece, with enough leftovers for two more meals. Counter service was friendly, knowledgeable, and operations in the front and back of the house seemed very efficient. Beside the cash register was a stack of receipts stapled to the $25 gift cards, so judging by that stack and the crowd inside, I would say their grand opening promotion was a big hit. We will definitely be back!
