Last year for Halloween Michael wanted to be Sorcerer Mickey and we looked everywhere locally to find the costume with no luck. When we decided that we were going to be able to go to Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party at the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World I knew I had to try and make this costume happen. Here's how we went about making this costume.

Like I said earlier, we tried looking for this costume last Halloween and all I could find was some expensive
costumes over on Amazon. We even tried looking into making a wizard robe, but I'm an extreme novice when it comes to using
sewing patterns and my sewing machine. Since we already had
Mickey's sorcerer hat and
gloves, we started looking for robes. I found this light weight white Calvin Klein women's robe at Marshall's for 1/4 of the retail cost!
Since the robe had this embroidery on it, I needed to remove it. I used my
seam ripper and
fabric scissors to remove the Calvin Klein.
After removing the embroidery, I washed the robe to make sure it was completely clean. Since Mickey's robe is not white, we needed to dye it. I first started with this
Rit Dye in wine. I do not recommend using this color because the robe ended up looking more purple than red.
I followed the instructions on the back of the bottle and was pleased with the color until after it was washed. Like I said, it had more of a purple tent to it than red.
Since I was dealing with a large item, I ended up having Jon help me with rinsing it. I found kneading it like dough helped.
I ended up dying the robe 2 - 3 more time with the
Rit Dye in cherry red. It did improve the color and brought it to more of a red color, but after washing it the tent was still more on the purple side. We eneded up buying the
Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative to use after dyeing, but before washing. It seemed to help keep the red tent better.
We bought the rope at Joann Fabric. I then taped the ends of the rope so they wouldn't fray and then knotted each end. The blue shorts were pj bottoms we already had and the black shirt was actually an Olaf Halloween shirt we also already had turned inside out. Michael absolutely loved his costume and I did hear a few people comment passing by about the costume while at the party. I hope this helps in making your Sorcerer Mickey costume on a budget.
